Technology Tenacity

I recently gave in and allowed myself the modern convenience of in-home techno wizardry. I have also been changing my name. All passwords are questionable. All access to everything is challenging. I want to try these new "things" but it takes me so long to try this password or was it that user name? I forget what I was trying to do. And then I wander off into You-tube or Flick'r lands and become hopelessly lost for days and days.

My main motivation for this upheaval was to take on-line classes. These are the ultimate in convenience. Metro Community College offers an associates degree in library services. I took the first intro class last year, or was it the year before? Currently, I am taking a personal interest class "Assisting Aging Parents".

Obviously, the speed of researching information through internet access is amazing. (Google, databases, etc.) The sharing capabilities are awesome! (You-tube, Flick'r, and Creative Commons.) Communication with e-mail is getting easier. (When is the last time you received a really truly letter?)

Much of what is out there is taken for granted. Everything is fine until the electricy goes off! Then we discover our true dependence on these powerful innovations. Several years ago there was a massive power grid failure in the northeastern United States. My goodness what a mess! Not just there, but all over the rest of the country and half of Canada. (Are auotmatic toilets really necessary?) The electric power resources in California have been challenged for a long time. How did they fix it? They elected Arnold!

What about e-bay? Ordering books through Amazon? Wow! All sorts of things tracked down, ordered, paid for, and shipped to your home at the touch of a button. Payment? No problem you have a credit card!

There are few things in life as certain as change, death and taxes. For a while there was buzz about taxing internet usage. How would that be accomplished? The web is global in nature and significant changes in our modern existence include global technologies, businesses and economics.

So much is possible that it becomes mind boggling and a little confusing. It takes time and tenacity to teach new tricks to an old dog. I will try and learn as much as I can before I give up, roll over, and play dead! (100-150 words?)
